On 10 October 2025, the Policy Learning Platform is hosting a webinar on Trails and routes for tourism development.
Europe’s cultural and natural heritage is vast and diverse. It encompasses natural landscapes, historic cities, archaeological sites, monuments, museums, artworks, and even literary and musical creations. This heritage is not only central to Europe’s identity and social life, but also a driver of local and regional economic development.
One effective way to showcase this richness is through cultural trails and routes. These give visitors practical guidance for exploring the traditions, history, and creativity of a territory. When well designed, they become valuable assets for sustainable regional development, boosting cultural tourism, generating income for local communities, and strengthening social cohesion.
Among the best-known examples are the European Cultural Routes, an initiative launched by the Council of Europe in 1987. The programme highlights how the diverse heritage of European regions contributes to a shared cultural legacy. It invites citizens to rediscover their roots while fostering cross-cultural understanding. By preserving and enhancing Europe’s cultural and natural heritage, the routes support not only cultural and social vitality but also sustainable economic growth.
